The Gods' Chessboard (Ithania)
The Chessboard "Fight to the death!" Shouted commands from the lords. Soldiers rushing into battle, Onto a giant chessboard. Then the Black and the White, Both their angers ready to burst. One side took the initiative; The White had started first. Then chaos ruled the battlefield, Circlians, Pentadrians; One and all. Under the noses of the deceitful gods, The whole of Ithania started to fall. Cackling evilly, they watched and played, Their enormous game of chess. People fighting everywhere, The board was an utter mess. Then stepped forward the strangest group The world had ever seen. A woman, two twins, a boy, a bird, And another who could weave through dreams. The oh-so-mighty gods who were once omnipotent, Were then trapped by the mighty Hexagon. One up, one down, four at the sides, They stunned the Pentadrians. And Circlians were furious for they believed That the immortals, so wise and old, Had trapped in a void their greatest need, Their one and only hope. Then the truth simply came pouring out Like a story from a book. Puzzlement, confusion, shock, and despair; The phenomenon drew many looks. An abrupt movement by one of the gods, Chaia, once so brave, Sent all the rest tumbling down nothingness, Deep into mystery's caves. It was too late, the moment had come, The phase they all had feared; The power in both the Black and the White Had vanished, disappeared. No war was fought, no lives were lost And now there was eternal peace. Prosperity then flowed over the lands, And the immortals went off in threes. Never was the incident forgotten, Witnesses could hear, feel, and see. But the words of Chaia, ever so silent; They were :Don't forget me.

I like it :-DD Its very good.

Lord Borne- 07-06-2008

i really liked that poem and that is something good in itself as i don't normally like poems.

Lady Tya- 07-06-2008

interesting... Your poem has put me in find of this: do you think the dream Auraya has at the end of PotW (involving a chess game) is connected to the idea that the God's played with the people like a check game? Is it supposed to be an early clue about that or what?

Mirar- 07-06-2008

I've no idea about that... I'll re-read and get back to you on that. :D Thanks floot and Borne :)

First post for me! Ohh, it's good. ":Don't forget me." always makes me sad... But the poems really nice. Every time I see a chess board I think of this book. xD

Lady Nirakka- 07-17-2008

I started reading the poem and figured in the middle that I should probably wait till I finsh VotG since I sense it has something to do with the last battle, I wanted to finish it but I made myself stop. I am not much of a poetry fan but this one I really enjoyed. Probably cause it is well written and tells a story of something you know and that makes you understand what it is all about. I will come back and read the full poem when I am trhough the book :book:

Nice poem Mirar, really well done!

Lady Nirakka- 07-24-2008

Yup it is as good as I got a glimpse of eralier, but there is one little thingy: verse 3 line 3: People were dying verse 11 line 1: no war was fought, no lives wer lost. hmm, maybe rude of me to point that out. But then again it is poetry and it might not mean excactly what the words say. So it probably all comes to the interpretation.

Mirar- 08-08-2008

Thanks Lady Nirakka it's not rude at all! In fact, I'd rather you say it and I correct it than just leave it, thanks so much anyway, I'll change it. And Tya, I think Canavan wanted the whole idea to be BlackVSWhite, but her thoughts were probably not that detailed at that time. She just had decided on the theme, which is exactly like a chess game. If you haven't noticed, Verse 2 Line 4 states "The White had started first". Doesn't chess always begin with white? LOL so random. Okay, thanks all for your comments, they mean a lot to me!

Shadowed Empress- 08-08-2008

Love it. A powerful part in the book and a great interpretation.
