Running in Circles
OK, so I know Sonea might act a little out of character here, but I was imagining that her feelings for Akkarin were making her, not depressed but just more melancholy than we know her. :> And I decided to include a guitar in this fanfic... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Running in circles gets me nowhere' Sonea let her fingers shift to the strings below on the guitar, the instrument so loved by the slum dwells. 'But pointless actions keep me warm' She shifted her fingers again. The movement had become so familar. She watched from the roof of the University the deserted gardens below, singing the songs her mother had written before she died. 'And these aren't the clouds of a storm,' she finished gently. Her thoughts returned to her mother, whom she barely remembered; she didn't even remember how she died. Sonea mused over whether this should make her feel guilty. She felt eyes on her back and turned to see Akkarin watching her. 'Thank you for giving me access to the roof,' she said meekly. He nodded, his mouth curling into that familiar half-smile he was so good at. He replied to her thanks, but his eyes distracted her from listening. They sparkled. She suppressed a sigh. She had felt this way since the night she killed the Ichani woman. There was no way of telling how close the Ichani were now, but Akkarin had an idea that they were, if not already in Imardin, close. Her fingers started brushing a few random notes. Akkarin, observing them, remarked, 'You learn fast.' Suppressing a familiar warmth at his words, she smiled faintly. 'I used to play when I was young, too. Until I was about... ten, I think.' Looking out on the gardens again, she said, 'I find it relaxing.' Akkarin nodded. 'I do too.' She looked at him, surprised. 'Do you play an instrument?' Somehow, she couldn't imagine that. 'No.' His lips were again set in his signature half-smile. 'But I find listening to one relaxing.' Sonea tried not to assume that he meant listening to her. 'Come down and eat when you are ready.' She nodded at his words. He rose and left. She sighed, trying to distract herself with another of her mother's songs - well, lyrics. The melodies, she made up herself. 'Smiling to them all Remembering their happiness She sighs If she is happy, she wonders why she still cries' Akkarin had become more friendly towards her recently and, though it seemed about time, she couldn't stop those irritating hopes rising again. 'She wakes up surrounded by clouds And knows it's just a dream But the music plays so loud She wants it to be as real as it seems' Sonea knew nothing about poetry. She didn't even know if her mother's was good. All she knew was that singing it made her feel less guilty that she couldn't remember anything. And she didn't need to feel guilty in the middle of a war. The slaves had been coming frequently, but none had been trusted with any very valuable knowledge. She frowned in worry. When would Akkarin tell the Guild of the Ichani? If they were as close as he said, he would need to tell them very soon. She shook her head and continued playing.
