Names I don't know if it has been discussed before and if I could make a new thred for it, but I was wondering about the names of the magicians. Take for example Lord Dannyl, I assume Dannyl is his first name, yes? But what happens if there is more than one person with the same name? I just can not believe that in the whole group of magicians every single person happens to have another name.
So how would that work out? Would they start using the House-names as well such as Lord Akkarin of Velan? But what then about the lower classes who do not belong to a House? I'm curious as to you thoughts about this ^-^

Ah, you know in books there rarely are characters with the same names as it would simply be too confusing for the readers to deal with. It does happen (as in the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop) but then one of the characters gets a nick name or an alias - same as in the real world. It would be fun though, "Hey what up, Lord D"?

 That's an fun image Kas.
Well, I assume it would just be like really life as well. You just refer to them by name and then someone says 'Which Lord ____' and so forth, or people just figure out which one you're talking about.

That's really interesting LS. It took me ages to work out if the names in teh book are first- or surnames. I still have a little trouble with the whole idea, but somehow a name like 'Rothen' seems much more surname-like than 'Akkarin', which is obviously a first name. Weird.
As for your question, I was also wondering if they *have* surnames. I dont think the dwells do, and maybe the houses use their house names as recognition. Yeah, that makes sense.
Lady Shadow- 07-05-2007
Yes that was what I was thinking and why I think their names are their first names. With the people you know their full name of (as in eg. Akkarin of Velan blablabla), they always say Lord Akkarin. Which is why it leads me to believe the names are everybody's first names. And I don't know, Rothen seems like a nice first name to me. Probably because I already thought about 'Rothen' as a first name from the beginning. I actually had more problems with Akkarin as a first name haha.

anyway
they cant say whoever of house whatever cuz remember when they said thatwhen one enters the guild they leave all family relations behind
Akala- 07-08-2007
That's true Daniver, but I got the sense that they still use the house titles in official capacities, like at meets and that sort of thing.
j_mercuryuk- 07-08-2007
They used Akkarin's full title at his trail thing, so I guess so.
Daniver- 07-10-2007
they only used it cuz it was definite he was going to be expelled from the guild so technically he was not the high lord any longer even before they decided his fate

Probably would just assume that they were reffering to the one that had at the moment, drew the most attention. The magicians dont seem to talk about anything else.
j_mercuryuk- 01-02-2008
Well, i'm sure with 500 magicians in the guild at one point, least two must have the same name as each other, right? But i get your meaning.
Lord Tiakin- 04-13-2008
I don't know, really.
To be honest, I thought the names the magicians were called after "lord" were there first names, as when they address each other in an informal context, they use that name. That's not to say they can't be surnames, it's entirely possible, but that's just how I see it.
As far as if two magicians have the same name, I think that one of the two magicians would have their first name as their title (Example: Lord Dannyl), and the other would use their surname as the title (Example: Lord Solgene )
Kasloumor- 04-13-2008
They do not have surnames as such. Remember Akkarin of House Velan, family of Delvon or something like that. So they were recognized by their Houses and Families.
Lord Tiakin- 04-13-2008
Ah, good point.
In which case, I'm thinking the only option would be for two people with the same name would be for one to adopt a nickname, or just have people question which one they're referring to.
Actually, I guess there's nothing stopping them from having surnames, though none were mentioned in the book, but it's really unlikely. ^^
Akala- 04-13-2008
I think more than one magician can have the same name. It almost puts my in mind of a university where more than one professor has the same name, but don't have the option of using another (surname) name.
