well you got to imagine a few magicians should be spies for the guild. lets face it. if an enemy is going to invide their going to go though the poor sections first and take a look around and likely use the sewers to peek up at the rich sections.
I can imagine though that cery's father being a thief helped some for him becoming one. and finding a good connection but to raise that high...he was either really good or akkarin gave him information. I'd bet on akkarin giving him information.

His father wasn't a thief, he just worked witht he thieves, and if any thing his father would hold him back as his father cheated on the thieves. They didn't like his dad after that. But the thieves were keeping an eye on Cery, i think that was mentioned anyway.

Ah good point, I'd forgotten about that. But would he have read any minds that would hold information like that.

Well, if he threatened a person who was likely to know anything, the person would at least have thought about some stuff at that very moment, and that could have led him to a more important person a.s.o. a.s.o. ....
Cery mentioned he would never have reached such a high position within such a short space of time without the help of Akkarin. I think he even thought once that everything he had reached was due to Akkarin, because he gave him the right information about the thieves.

Of course, he had to know what to do with these infos, and he already knew a lot of people, as well as what's "common" among the thieves. He had always been part of that world, Akkarin hadn't. :)
