Cavern of Ultimate Punishment I was curious. I just remembered in the 2nd book, that Danyll was looking for infro on black magic or should I say "ancient magical knowledge." Well remember when he found that place that is like a trap for magician's that was called 'Cavern of ultimate Punishment' and that he nearly got killed? how old do you think that place is? Do you think the Sachakian's put it there out of hatred for the guild? and why in Elyne and not Kyralia?
(by the way on page 396-397, 406-407 if anyone wants to reread)

I've been re-reading, which took me quite some time, as I am sure I have a different version than yours and so the page numbers did not quite match up... :) And I found nothing to suggest how old it was, however, I think it is safe to say that it is older than the Guild, or at least older than the time in which Higher Magic has been banned - after all, the room was found during a search for Ancient/Higher/Black Magic. I will look into it more, I think, that a re-reading of some of the history surrounding the Sachakan wars and general history might yield something - it was after all, if I'm not entirely mistaken, an execution-room.
Just a side question: If the magicians fought off the blasts until death, they would be drained of their energy, would that mean that they would 'combust', or die naturally?

that is possible that they would die naturally, but I also think since it's in a confined room, that if they don't die naturally that it keeps the magic from going outside of the room so if other magician's are on the other side then they're not really to affected.

Spontaneous Combustion is definately a downside to being a Magician, or at least, it is so for all others than the dying magician.
I don't think we will find an answer to the age of the room however - but my theory is that it was made during the Sachakan wars, and it therefore is as old as they are. This being that if it were an execution room, I'm thinking they had to have someone to execute, namely traitors and Sachakans? Ideas?

certainly does make sense.

Do they not only combust if any power is left within them... and thats why the two Sachakans that the theives struck with spears combusted... so if no energy is left they would die naturaly right....???? Now I am confused

Unless Magicians empty entirely the store of magic in them when they die then they 'combust'. Therefore I wonder whether or not a Magician would use up all their energy in the Cavern of Ultimate Punishment, or perhaps would still combust. It'd definately be convenient, saves you the mess. The Exploding Sachakan was an example of it. In the older days, when Higher Magic was practiced by the Guild, then the Magicians were drained of their magical powers before dying, which is why the only graves were more than 500 years old..

Technically they couldn't ever not self combust because they would die if they had any energy in them, so even if you were drained of almost all your power and killed you would have to be alive to be killed therefore meaning the killer would die to.

I think whether they combust or not depends on whether they fight back or not. Logically we would think they would fight back so it's very likely they would use up their magic so they would die naturally. But what if they didn't. What if they didn't fight back or they did and just didn't use all their strength? I think if that was the case then they would combust.

Perhaps if they were a little funny they may not shield themselves and instead blow up the room, however, It'd be more likely if they tried to do as Lord Dannyl did and force a way forwards past the barrier, and in that way survive. A pumped up black magician combusting could be entertaining...

Some people obviously have a very sick idea of entertainment

you could say that again....but then again if you didn't have to worry about the black magician combusting then that might some how seem entertaining....though to some people. not me :-D
