Oh dear, I just gave my niece of 13 book 1 in Danish as a Christmas present and I managed to read it before Christmas. So far there are 4(!) books in Danish in the series (ultrathin each of them of course and there are still 2 more to go (The High Lord) and the translation is horrid! The translater is a man of about 60 and clearly he has not read the entire trilogy yet or is romantically inclined nor is he aware of the fact that the books are usually read right after finishing the third one because you want to read about Akkarin again now that you know him. The translater calls the robes for cloaks (so what will he call the cloaks for crying out loud) and he is letting Sonea use the title Master when addressing Akkarin in stead of High Lord and the words for High Lord is NOT high lord and... oh god, it just sucks. For instance I read the passage with Lorlen and Akkarin on the University roof. In the translation the IDIOT has omitted that Akkarin's words about not being jaloux were so faint that Lorlen wasn't sure he heard them at all. So now the Danish readers will believe he just said them out loud. It is a disaster. Just a disaster :-(

Oh dear, i think they should sack the guy as he's obviously crap at his job.

Well, I am going to tell the publisher - am writing a serious complaint now.

ha ha ha - well, after reading my letter which consists of 3 long pages of complaints, I suppose he'd feel like killing himself alright. I am now translating the complaint into English and will send a copy to Orbit as well as Ms. Canavan (as I have also stated in my letter to the Danish publisher) as the mistakes are grave. Let me tell you the latest one I found: He lets Sonea address Akkarin in the Novice as Master Akkarin!!!! MASTER !!! And so both Sonea and Takan call him Master. This is horrid. Just horrid and must be stopped. The translator needs to find himself another job.

Goos for you. It sounds like a complete nightmare, that stuff would not only ruin it but also drive me crazy, it's driving me crazy and I haven't even seen or read the danish. I'm sooo glad I read it in English, I mena for all those people who only read it in Danish some important points will either be missed or just totally confusing. How can they let that happen to BMT??

No exactly. I am so p..... off. Especially since I care about this trilogy (I know it's a HUGE shock to anybody on this forum, lol) and I bought the books in Danish because I wanted her to like them just as much as I had when I read them in English. And though she has already read the first half of MG and is begging me for more I just feel like she is being cheated. But of course I am going to give her the rest of the books. I sort of have to finish what I have started :-)

Well at least she can still like them, even if she is being cheated. That must be a sign of how good they are, if she can still appreciate them even if the translater messed up.

I think what you're doing is amazing Kas, so proud that you're going so far with what is very important. It just shows how much we (especially you) care about these books, and want to see them do right. You go Kas. Brilliant.

Ehm I'd like to think that we all care about the books but thanks anyway. Probably won't change a thing though.

No but at least you didn't just stand by at let it happen. If they're stupid enough to let BMT be ruined even after your letter then it was their decision, not some accident. So fine they don't deserve to live if taht's the case but at least you'll know. Hey, if they don't why don't you try translating them yourself?

See, the market doesn't work that way. You have to be a publisher to buy the rights and this publisher has done just that. So those books are off limit. Wish I had thought of it a year ago. I would have loved translating them.

Ah, OK I don't know anything about the publishing industry. So unless you do a black market edition that idea's out.

They may realise and get a better translator though.
